Note and family history : to [Gerald Chippindale Rivington], 1903.

Consists of a handwritten note and a printed biography of William Bentley, a printer. The biography also refers to other members of Bentley's family who were publishers. The book from which these two documents were transferred contains Rivington's bookplate and it is presumed that the note and history were sent to him by Bentley. In the note (1903 Oct. 16), Bentley presents the book which is a history of various publishing houses.

Richard Bentley, last of the Bentley family of English publishers, conducted the family business for five years. In 1898, Bentley dissolved the firm and made over its stock and assets to MacMillan and Company. Bentley then became active in a range of professional, literary and charitable organizations including; The Royal Literary Fund, The Royal Meteorological Society and The Worshipful Company of Stationers.
