Shakespeare promptbook collection, 1756-1950 (inclusive), 1800- 1900 (bulk).

The Shakespeare promptbook collection consists of promptbooks used for productions of Shakespeare's plays mainly on the British and American stage. The dates of the promptbooks range from 1756 to 1950 however the bulk date from the 19th century. Many of the promptbooks are associated with prominent Shakespearean actors such as Edwin Booth, Henry Irving, Charles Kean, Ellen Terry, Charlotte Cushman and others. The promptbooks vary in style, format and amount of annotation. Included are books used by actors, directors, prompters and stage managers during production as well as souvenir books created after the production to record the action on stage. Several of the promptbooks include scene or costume desings and many have blocking diagrams.
