The Royal Observatory dates its foundation from two warrants issued under the name of Charles II. Born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Redman was educated locally and at St. John's College, Cambridge, graduating in mathematics in 1926. Perhaps influenced by Arthur Eddington and F.J.M.
