Collection consists of papers issued to Orpen by the British Army in France, including: 1918 June 12, a travel pass allowing Orpen to return to England from France and July 17 a sketching permit authorizing Orpen to sketch in the area occupied by the British Armies during the period from July 17-Sept. 30, 1918. With a letter 1919 Dec. 5, Paris, to Edward Marsh regarding a portrait.

Sir William Orpen, born in Dublin, Ireland, was a portrait painter. He resided in Ireland and England and was friend of W.B. Yeats. Orpen studied at the Metropolitan School of Art (Dublin) and Slade School, and became an official artist in World War I.
