Correspondence, genealogical and historical writings, clippings, photographs, pamphlets, diaries, notebooks, postcards, scrapbooks, and financial records of Donelson Caffery and other members of the Caffery family, particularly Bethia Richardson Caffery and John Murphy Caffery. Donelson Caffery's correspondence primarily concerns family matters, Louisiana politics, Louisiana campaigns during the Civil War, his U.S. senatorial career, the Spanish-American War and its effect on the Louisiana sugar industry, his involvement in the Louisiana oil industry, and plantation business. John Murphy Caffery's diary and correspondence mostly concern family matters, his attendance at the U.S. Naval Academy, his service in the Navy, and the Louisiana sugar industry. The papers also include John M. Donelson Caffery was born near Franklin, La., on September 10, 1835, and served as a lieutenant in the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He married Bethia Richardson in 1869. He was a planter in St. Mary Parish, La., state senator for St. Mary Parish (1892-1894), and U.S. senator from Louisiana (1893-1901). He died in New Orleans, La., on December 30, 1906.
