The collection contains the papers of Jeanne Whatley Baldwin from circa 1892-1995. The papers include correspondence, video tapes, genealogies, and photographs documenting several generations of the Whatley, Lipham, Downs, and Johnson families of Georgia and Alabama. The papers document social life and customs in the South during the late 19th century and early 20th century, including the Great Depression; Southern women; farm life; and higher education including Bowdon College (Bowdon, Georgia) and Oxford College (Oxford, Georgia).

Charles A. McDaniel and John M. Richardson founded Bowdon College in 1856. It was Georgia's first coeducational institution and fifth chartered institution of higher education. The school was founded with hopes that it could provide higher education for men of limited financial means. Richardson, who had a military background from The Citadel, procured 100 rifles and 100 swords to conduct military training at Bowdon prior to the Civil War.
