Diary (2 volumes) of Reed's mission (1857 Apr.-1859 Mar.) as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Emperor of China, together with correspondence from British and French officials and others in the Orient, letters to Reed's wife, telegrams, notes, clippings, maps, prints, and printed matter. The diary is supplemented by a typewritten transcript concerning the voyage and service in China.
