The original manuscript of Susan Warner's novel "The Wide, Wide, World" (New York : G. P. Putnam & Co., 1853), including the final chapter omitted from the original edition and subcsequent editions. The chapter was not included because the book had run longer in the galleys that the publisher expected.

Susan Bogert Warner was born in New York; her father, a successful lawyer, lost most of his wealth and property in 1837. Susan began writing to help support her family, and her first book, the sentimental domestic novel Wide, wide, world, eventually achieved almost unparalleled success and popularity, rivalling Little women and Uncle Tom's cabin.
