Annotated essay with a preface describing Baumeister's student years at Stuttgarter Kunstakademie (1905-1909) and the philosophy of his teacher Adolf Hölzel, by whom he was influenced. Baumeister indicates that due to rebellion against the "reactionary" methods of painting instruction, he was not a successful student until his "radical," naive talent was discovered by Hölzel. Baumeister describes how he and his friends Oskar Schlemmer and Otto Meyer-Amden flourished under Hölzel, whose teaching environment and philosophy are described in depth.
