The bulk of these vertical files were generated from Kostof's activities as an architectural historian and Professor of Architectural History at the University of California, Berkeley. They include lecture notes and student papers from courses taught at Berkeley, as well as a few lecture notes and papers from classes taught at Yale in the early 1960s, lecture notes from talks given at various national and international venues, including the 1976 Mathews Lectures at Columbia University. Other items include: correspondence related to Kostof's various publications; collected research materials in the form of photocopies, articles, clippings, etc.; photographs (.25 linear ft.) of Rome; source material (photocopies, articles, clippings, field notes, journal, photographs, negatives, 1 film and 1 sound reel) for the 1973 exhibition "The Third Rome : 1870-1950"; a final draft of "City Edge" (a chapter in Kostof's book "City Assembled"), illustrations found in Kostof's publications, book reviews, slides, a typescript of an unfinished novel and several poems.
