Obituaries, bibliographies, and correspondence. The Dempster portfolio was assembled by the University of Toronto Archives upon the death of A. J. Dempster in recognition of his achievements in physics. It includes obituaries from PHYSICS TODAY, and by Karl K. Darrow, S.K. Allison, and G.K.K. Link; a bibliography and abstracts of significant articles (1911-1938) prepared by Dempster upon his nomination by Lachlan Gilchrist for the 1947 Nobel Prize, as well as a complete bibliography of his publications through 1950, and correspondence between Dempster and Lachlan Gilchrist documenting the nomination for the Nobel Prize.

Arthur Jeffrey Dempster was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Chicago. Dempster joined the physics faculty at the University of Chicago in 1916 and remained there until his death in 1950.
