British patents of nobility manuscript, between 1825-1875.

Collection comprises an atlas folio (98 of about 150 pages) bound in vellum. The item features patents of nobility that were separated from a larger piece and pasted into the volume by its unidentified owner. The presentation of the material is organized around the monarchs of Britain, of whom only a few are unrepresented. Additional material is related to noble families in both Britain and Europe. The separated sections of the patents feature genealogic heraldry along with calligraphed text in German which is often accompanied by commentary in English. Each page is extra-illustrated with mezzotint portraits and scenes that were distributed in England by publishers including George Virtue, J. Parker, and George Kearsley, featuring artworks by Robert Peake and Anthony van Dyck, among others. A loose page in the volume was likely purposefully left unattached; it holds information on Oliver Cromwell with a handwritten note in pencil, "Neither Regal or Legal." Volume pages exhibit some water damage.
