The Leon McCulloch papers and photographs include his published articles, research reports, his sketches and notes, professional correspondence, scientific papers, photographs and negatives. Other materials include newspaper articles about George Westinghouse and Westinghouse Electric, as well as correspondence relating to the McCulloch family history. Most of the materials document his research in the following: materials for electrical insulation; causes and prevention of blowholes in copper; causes of passivity in iron, nickel and chromium; resistance of iron to corrosion; reactions of nickel carbonate with nickel acetate and with nickel propionate; vacuum treatment of oil for the gland seal of the hydrogen cooled generator, and the solubility curves of boric acid and the borates of sodium. The photographs are mainly of machinery and of McCulloch working in a laboratory.

Leon (Mickey) McCulloch was a chemist and researcher at Westinghouse Electric from 1910 until his retirement in 1952. He was born on July 21, 1886. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of North Carolina in 1910, and he studied chemistry at Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1910 until 1912.
