Merritt family papers, 1778-1814.

Primarily the papers of Jotham Merritt, of Greenwich, Connecticut, this collection contains an emancipation, an indenture, an agreement for the use of a house, and estate documents for Merritt. An additional piece contains accounts with the Sloop Dolphin in 1778. The emancipation frees Jane, Merritt's "Negro woman." The indenture is for a black girl to work for the Merritts for ten years. The housing agreement is between Jotham Merritt and his father, Nathan Merritt. The estate documents detail the land left to Jotham's wife, Mary, and children Elizabeth, Harriet, Caroline, and Jotham.
