The collection includes Speyer's architectural designs documented in photographs, slides, published and unpublished articles, and sketches; plans, sketches and photographs of various museum installations designed by Speyer; detailed design and working drawings for Speyer's architectural projects; biographical data, personal photographs, photographs of Mies van der Rohe projects, and some IIT items; installation views, exhibition annoucements and catalogs for the Paris gallery owned by Speyer's sister Darthea, Galerie Darthea Speyer.

A. James Speyer (1913-1986) attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, receiving a B.S. degree in architecture in 1934. In 1939 he became the first graduate student of Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After service in the U.S. Army during WWII, Speyer returned to Chicago to teach at IIT (1946-1961) as well as developing a private practice (1946-1957).
