Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility. Auguste Davezac was a prominent New Orleans attorney and brother-in-law of Edward Livingston. He was personal aide to Andrew Jackson during the defense of New Orleans in 1814-1815. Davezac twice served as chargé d'affaires to the Netherlands (1831-1839 and 1845-1850), was appointed special diplomatic agent to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1833), and was elected to the New York state legislature (1843).
