Harry Renton Bridges, also known as Alfred Renton Byrant Bridges, came to the United States in 1920 from Australia where he had been a seaman and involved in union activities. Julia Ruuttila (1907-1991) was a prominent Northwest labor activist and journalist. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, to John and Ella Godman, who were labor and women's suffrage activists. Ruuttila's labor activism included organizing for the woodworkers' union, and she was instrumental in organizing women's auxiliaries of the woodworkers' and longshoremen's unions.
