Jedediah Huntington orderly book, 1776.

Book of orders (1776 Jan. 1-Apr. 2) from George Washington written by Jedediah Huntington. The orders vary throughout the book. In the beginning the orders appear more concerned with organization. There are entries detailing the make-up of regiments and companies; details of punishments; troops being court martialed; and orders for troop movements. Because of the time the book was maintained it can be concluded that some of the orders are in reference to the spring of 1776 march to Boston. At the beginning of the book, there is a letter from the donors describing how the book was received as well as biographical information on Huntington, especially dealing with his life after the war and including a picture of his house in New London.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington was born in Norwich, Conn. He graduated from Harvard in 1763 and received his master's in 1770 from Yale. After graduating from Harvard, he became involved with the Norwich Militia, eventually becoming a Captain in May, 1774. In the spring of 1776, now a Colonel, he marched to Dorchester Heights.
