Consists of one autograph letter signed J.A. Garfield to D.M. Wilson of Youngstown, Ohio, thanking him for his "kind letter" and stating: "On the vines that grow over the wall of party politics, are grown the sweetest flowers that bloom in the garden of friendship. Those that you send me are the more beautiful for this reason." The letter is dated 27 February 1871 from Washington, D.C. Includes envelope with Wash. D.C., Congress "Free" frank and typescript copy.

James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
