William Edouard Scott was a prominent painter, illustrator and muralist who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Scott was one of the first nationally known African American artists in Chicago, and his work is held in many museums and private collections. His papers include biographical materials, correspondence, programs, clippings, photographs and memorabilia.

William Edouard Scott was born in Indianapolis in 1884. He moved to Chicago and attended the School of Art Institute of Chicago. During his time in Chicago he painted murals around the city, one of which was Commerce, which is still lauded today as remarkable.
