Lectures on the English poets, ca. 1841-1842, 1847.

Bound volume containing the manuscript, in the hand of Henry Reed, of a series of public lectures he gave on the English poets, at the University of Pennsylvania, in College Hall, from 1 November 1841 to 24 January 1842. Each lecture has its own title page, in Reed's hand and signed by him. His opening remarks indicate that he conceived of this lecture series as a kind of continuation of and supplement to a lecture series on English poetry that he had delivered in the same location a few months earlier, in spring 1841 (see Ms. Coll. 859, Box 2). In the present manuscript, Lecture 10, on Milton's Paradise Lost, has a pencilled note on the title page, in the hand of Reed, indicating that on 3 June 1847 it was read in part to the pupils of the Institution for the Blind, Philadelphia, presumably the Pennsylvania Institution for Instruction of the Blind (today known as the Overbrook School for the Blind). The manuscript has emendations in black ink similar to that used in the original writing, as well as occasional notes in pencil.
