Mark Ellingson Printing Alumni Awards, circa 1965.

Two Mark Ellingson Printing Alumni Award medals. Ellingson was RIT President from 1936 to 1969 and was instrumental in bringing the Empire School of Printing to RIT in 1937. There is no historical information on the Mark Ellingson Printing Alumni Award at this time. The awards may have been given out at the RIT School of Printing Alumni annual luncheons.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
