Stephens writes to [the same?] unidentified [American?] correspondent, 1876 April 5 and December 15, 1877 June 2 and November 24, and 1879 August 4, concerning the death of his wife and his publications; a mistake in [J. Weise's?] essays regarding the first use of "aloofness"; doubts about publication in America; reviews of his work; Edmund C. Stedman's poems, particularly one about Hawthorne, whom he admires but does not read "with much pleasure"; a meeting with the American publisher George Palmer Putnam; and the slow progress of his writing.
