RIT wrestling uniforms, 1950-1990.

The RIT wrestling uniforms consists of 19 pieces of uniforms collected from different time periods. There are robes, shorts, jerseys, pants, shoes, head gear, and travel bag used by members of the men's wrestling teams. The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) wrestling uniforms collection contains the following items: wool Rochester Tech wrestling robe (#2) in dark blue with white lettering; wool wrestling pants in blue with gray stripe down each leg; canvas/leather wrestling head gear with ear protectors has name tag with Jim Modrak on it; cotton RIT wrestling robe in blue with white lettering on back; polyester RIT wrestling jersey in blue with white lettering on back; polyester RIT wrestling jersey in white with blue lettering on back; polyester wrestling shorts in blue with white stripe; 2 pair polyester wrestling pants in blue with white stripe; Rochester Institute of Technology Wrestling & Coaching School t-shirt in white with orange lettering; RIT wrestling "50 Years Maturing to Perfection, 1927-1977" t-shirt in white with orange lettering; canvas RIT wrestling shoes in off-shite, size 13; nylon RIT wrestling warm-up jacket in brown with orange and white lettering (#177); nylon RIT wrestling warm-up pants in brown with orange and white lettering; nylon RIT wrestling one piece uniform in brown with orange and white lettering; RIT sports travel bag in brown; wool RIT wrestling jersey in black with Mechanics in white lettering on front; wool RIT wrestling jersey in black with MI FROSH in white letter on front. Label on back says Frosh wrestling, 1929-1930, Donald F. Thomas, Class of '32, Elec. Dept. Mechanics Institute; polyester RIT wrestling one piece uniform in orange with white and black letter; polyester RIT wrestling one piece uniform in orange, white and black. The blue and gray pieces appear to be from the 1950's-1960's. Jim Modrak wrestled from 1953-1955.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...
