The RIT Student Union building plaque is a large, metal framed sign which reads R.I.T. STUDENT UNION The RIT Student Union buidling plaque once hung outside the downtown campus Student Union in Rochester, NY. It is made of a silver metal frame, the background is a brick red color, and the lettering is silver metal. The sign is approximately 24 x 12 inches and rather heavy.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
