William Joseph Barnhart was born in Boonville, Mo., in 1923. Barnhart joined the military in 1943, serving in France and Austria for 18 months. Beginning in April 1946, Barnhart attended the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1947 and a Masters of Arts in 1949. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1955.
