Virgil McCullough photographs, 1978.

Virgil McCullough photographs document the 1978 NTID production of "The Phoney Gentleman." McCullough's photographs include images of the performance, behind the scenes views, and character portraits. Formats include photographs, contact sheets, and negatives. McCullough photographed the production while a student at RIT, and the photos were later used in an exhibit, "The Play is the Thing." Virgil McCullough photographs document the National Institute of the Deaf production of the play "he Phoney Gentleman"in 1978.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
