It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...

Born deaf, Susan Dupor grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. She attended RIT and studied illustration before transferring to the Art Institute of Chicago where she finished her BFA. Dupor has participated in several exhibitions and has published several articles on deaf culture and the arts. She returned to RIT and earned a Master's of Science in Deaf Education and Art Education, a joint program with the University of Rochester. Susan Dupor currently teaches art at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. ...
