Zoe Horowicz is a longtime library supporter and volunteer, including at the University of Rochester and RIT. Ms. Horowicz has worked fastiduously on several projects for the RIT Archives and Cary Library, including a survey of the Will Burtin collection and cataloging digital images. Born in Nebraska, Ms. Horowicz attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and earned her degree in nursing from Johns Hopkins. She moved to Rochester in 1969. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
