Born in Rochester, New York, Ramón Santiago (1943-2001) began painting while attending Mt. San Antonio College in California in 1961. He returned to Rochester to study art at RIT from 1963 to 1965. After serving in the United States Marine Corps in the mid-1960s, he began his professional art career. Influenced by Chagall, Picasso, Dali and others, Santiago's work is a figurative style with dramatic fantasy. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
