Papers and photographs, 1947-1952.

Papers and photographs of John L. Oakeson, a Marinette, Wisconsin native, who served in the Korean War with the 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Papers consist mostly of materials that he collected while in the service. This includes church service bulletins, newspaper clippings from his hometown regarding his service, a Thanksgiving Day menu in the Philippines, an airplane ticket for his time of leave in May 1951, and a poem written by a fellow service member, Del E. White, regarding the life of a Marine. Of particular interest are several propaganda and safe conduct passes directed at Chinese and Korean soldiers during the war. Also included are letters from the Marine Corps recruiting office sent to Oakeson's parents informing them of their son's entry into service. Photographs show Oakeson and his fellow squadron members at base camps and bunkers in Korea. Also included are images of his time at Camp Pendleton, tourist photos of San Francisco, and several photos taken when Oakeson escorted actress Betty Hutton during her USO tour in Korea. There is also a photo from 1951 of the Honor Platoon (Platoon 373 U.S. Marine Corps) taken in San Diego. Most of the collection was originally included on scrapbook pages that were dismantled for preservation purposes. Photocopies of the original pages are included in the collection. Oakeson served with the Marines during the Korean War as an infantryman and sniper. After the war, he earned a degree in industrial arts from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and taught at several high schools in Wisconsin. He eventually married and settled in Waunakee, Wisconsin.
