Diaries, papers, and photographs of Leonard Madaus, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native who served as a C-46 pilot with the 1332nd Army Air Force Base Unit in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. The two diaries describe flight conditions for each mission Madaus flew and provide details about life on base between flight assignments. One diary is a running tally of flight hours completed for each round-trip mission and provides a brief description of the conditions Madaus experienced during each flight. The other diary briefly describes life in between flight missions, including recreational activities and other duties Madaus performed. He often takes note in the diary of when fellow crew members and ships were lost during certain operations. Papers include an identification card, a travel check-list, and decals from the Hump Pilots Association. Photographs include images of Madaus and fellow squadron members in front of tents on base and in front of airplanes. There are also a couple of photographs taken during rest leave in Lucknow, India. Madaus flew a route known as "The Hump," a high-altitude military aerial supply route over the Himalayan Mountains from the Assam Valley in northeastern India to Yunnan province in southwestern China. Madaus flew 88 missions and logged 650 flight hours before he was discharged in 1945. After the war Madaus married and worked at the Milwaukee Mutual Insurance Company. He also became a member of the Hump Pilots Association.
