James A. Seddon letter to Jefferson Davis [manuscript], 1865 March 21.

Seddon requests a cadetship for J. Irvine Dickinson, the son of Virginia State Senator Asa D. Dickinson, who already has the recommendations of the Confederate Congressman from his district and the current Confederate Secretary of War John C. Breckinridge. Seddon notes that Dickinson is qualified, a V.M. I. cadet wounded at New Market, who responded to the last call for V.M.I. cadets to report for service even though he was not yet 17. Seddon concludes the letter with remarkable optimism regarding the future of the Confederacy less than two weeks before the fall of Richmond: "I congratulate you on the manifest improvement in the spirit and hopes of the people, which from even the slight successes recently achieved have rebounded from the depressing influences which past reverses and the discouraging opinions spread from the late Congress had measurably caused... [the] men of the country are firm and steadfast to the Cause and yourself as the great Leader, and prepared to make any sacrifice and bear all trials and privations rather than yield themselves and their posterity to the hateful foe...they must & will I trust be invincible, and you will yet have...the proud satisfaction of establishing...the Liberties and Independence of your Country.
