Thanking him for sending him a copy of "Contemporary English woodcuts" (i.e. "your woodcut book"), praising the quality of the book, expressing his pleasure at hearing of the positive reception it has received from the booksellers ("it is indeed most encouraging if there really is a public for such austere prints (what the public calls 'austere' of course) put together in such a handsome manner"), and offering to distribute prospectuses for it.

Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
