Tony McGregor, usually called "Tony Mac," is a nationally known Deaf artist. He was interested in art as a child and attended Gallaudet University and then the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He is currently back at the University of Texas, pursuing a doctorate in multicultural special education with an emphasis on museum studies. McGregor helped establish the National Association of the Native American Deaf (now called Intertribal Deaf Council). ...

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
