According to the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) 1988 Yearbook, Techmila, the RIT Community for Nuclear Awareness was "an association of students, focus[ed] on issues dealing with the arms race, nuclear power and U.S. domestic and foreign policy." During the 1987-1988 school year, the group participated in various rallies for nuclear disarmament and sponsored several lectures on related topics. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
