Institutional Advancement Commission records 1975-1978

Records of the institutional Advancement Commission, an organization started in 1975 to determine the future direction of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The collection contains reports from the university's nine academic areas as well as background research on higher education and RIT's unique role. There is also some correspondence and a final report published by the commission. The Institutional Advancement Commission records contain research materials used by the Commission to create its final report. The correspondence in the collection is mostly from business leaders that had hired Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) alums. These individuals were asked to provide feedback on the university's successes and shortcomings in educating the work force. The collection also includes reports from the nine academic areas of the university: College of General Studies, College of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Graphic Arts and Photography, College of Business, College of Continuing Education, Institute College, and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. These reports include background and data on the various colleges including histories, faculty information, tenure criteria, facilities overviews, descriptions of service involvement, and stated goals and philosophies. Most reports also include enrollment figures and other relevant data. In addition to the individual college reports, the collection includes some background research on topics such as a history of higher education, career-based educational programs, and RIT's educational system. A copy of the Commission's final report is located at the end of the collection.

For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...
