3rd and 4th Massachusetts Militia Divisions' order book, 1838-1843.

This collection consists of a letter book, also called an order book, for the 1st and 6th Brigades of the 3rd and 4th Massachusetts Militia Divisions. It includes daily orders, mainly from the units' headquarters in Springfield and Boston, Massachusetts. The orders include descriptions of the delivery of rifles and swords to each unit, parade and inspection orders, and orders to report for a local convention where delegates would be elected to represent each division.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. After organization was completed, the regiment was ordered to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor.
