The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The Penn State women's track and field team was organized in 1974, and competed in indoor and outdoor events sponsored by the AIAW in the Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which merged with the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1983.
