Sylvia Fein papers, 1940-2010.

Correspondence, photographs, writings, artwork, printed material, and memorabilia documenting the career of Sylvia Fein as an artist and author. Correspondence, some illustrated, constitutes the largest series in the collection and includes letters and postcards from friends and collegues Marshall Glasier, John and Shirley Wilde, Dudley Huppler, Karl Priebe, Helen Ashman, Lee Hoiby, and Klaus Perls among others. Also of note is almost daily correspondence in the form of mail art with Fein's husband's oncologist, Randall Oyer. Photographs in the collection are concentrated primarily in the years between 1940 and 1960 and document the gatherings of the Magic Realist Group at the University of Madison, Wis. and immediately after the end of World War II. There are photographs of Dudley Huppler and Karl Priebe taken by George Platt Lynes and Carl Van Vechten. Writings relate to two books, "Heidi's Horse," (1976) and "First Drawings: Genesis of Visual Thinking," (1993). There is also a manuscript of "The Lesson Book," a self-published title by Dudley Huppler. Art work includes a number of loose drawings by John Wilde and Marshall Glasier. Also present is one small oil painting by John Wilde. Printed material and memorabilia contains numerous clippings Fein collected about herself and her circle of friends as well as reviews of her books, and articles and promotional material, including two campaign buttons, about her run for City Council in Northern California.
