James B. Hosmer was a Hartford, Connecticut, businessman and entrepreneur. This collection consists of diaries, letter books, account books and correspondence. The diaries date from 1846-1863 and include notations on the weather, property management including overseeing construction, estate settlements, construction of the Wadsworth Atheneum and hiring staff for the "Historical Rooms" that contained the beginning collection of the Connecticut Historical Society at the Atheneum. Letter books, 1834-1877, contain handwritten copies of business letters Hosmer sent to his associates. The earliest account book for is the Connecticut Historical Society in account with Hosmer, who was acting as treasurer, 1839-1853. The later book is a record of the annuity paid to Thomas Robbins, the Historical Society's first librarian. This volume also includes some copies of letters, 1877-1878. Also included in the collection is correspondence, 1825-1826, with William Ely, agent of the Hartford Steamship Company, Ely's account in Merchant's Bank, and Hosmer's membership certificates in the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and the American Bible Society.
