Stanford University, Planning Office, photographs, circa 1905-2002.

This collection includes photographs (negatives, prints, slides, and digital format) produced by the Planning Office or by related offices prior to the inception of the Planning Office (such as Buildings and Grounds), as well as photographs from other sources that were acquired by the Planning Office. The images are generally of projects under way or of campus areas slated for projects. Of note are campus aerials, 1951-1970; a series of negatives with matching prints of academic buildings, largely from the late 1930s; a series of negatives with matching prints of the construction of Frost Amphitheater, 1936-1937, of Cubberley School of Education, ca. 1937, and of the San Juan Hill reservoir, 1941; negatives from the construction of Hoover Tower, ca. 1939; negatives of documents presented to the Board of Trustees, 1961-1970; images by Leo Holub of "Pigott Corner" being carved on the old Engineering Corner, 1996; and color images of the construction of the Science and Engineering Quad, 1997-98. Other subjects include dormitories, cars on campus, Searsville dam, and tree planting on campus.

Sequoia Hall, originally named Roble Hall, was the first women's dormitory at Stanford University; it was built with the "Ransome" process of reinforced concrete. It was renamed Sequoia in 1918 after a new Roble Hall was built. It was vacated in 1945 and then reduced to one floor in 1957, when it was used by the Statistics and the Applied Mathematics Departments. Leo Holub, graphic artist and photographer, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the California School of Fine Arts, most notably under Ansel Adams. He came to Stanford in 1960, working first in the Planning Department and then in 1969 creating the photography program in the department of art, at the invitation of Lorenz Eitner, head of the department.
