Edith Rubin Konecky was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Smith Rubin. Her father, the quintessential self-made man, had escaped the pogroms in Eastern Europe, immigrating to America where he would become a prosperous dress manufacturer.
