Papers of Joan Hearson-Lilly, circa 1953-1995 (bulk 1953-1960) [manuscript]. [ca. 1953-1995]

MS Acc10.079 comprises an unpublished essay entitled Indonesia in the 1950s: a personal experience, by Joan Hearson-Lilly. Joan Hearson-Lilly was the only Australian involved in a World Health Organisation team assigned to vaccinate the Indonesian population against tuberculosis. She worked in North and South Sumatra, West, East and Central Java, Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Bali. In describing the progress of the team in its work involving recruitment and training of local Indonesians, the essay provides first hand observations of Indonesia that convey the atmosphere of a newly independent country impoverished by Japanese occupation and its own struggle for independence. It depicts the local Indonesians as enthusiastic to learn and to cooperate and ends with a contribution from one who became proficient at a high level. In addition there are three photographs, two of vaccination teams and one of a queue of people waiting to be vaccinated (1 packet).
