A sixteenth-century ordinary rediscovered : Providence, John Hay Library BX2000 .A2 1519 [i.e. Ms. Latin Codex 4] / Caitlin Bass, May 2006

Detailed physical description, with color illustrations, and historical account of a codex manuscript, with colophon dated 1519, in the John Hay Library, Brown University (Ms. Latin Codex 4, formerly BX2000 .A2 1519). The complex nature of the text and consequent difficulty of its proper classification are discussed in some detail. The author, a PhD candidate in art history, identifies the main text as an ordinary ("liber ordinarus", also known as an ordinal), rather than a breviary, of the Benedictine monastery of Herrenbreitungen, in Breitungen, Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, Thuringia, Germany (founded shortly before 1016 and active until 1553, when the few remaining monks decamped to Erfurt, after which all of the buildings except the church were dismantled.) A concluding supplementary text is perhaps unclassifiable, though it has some of the characteristics of a rituale.
