Comprising a printer's proof, the Rutherford B. Hayes Diary, 1848-1849, chronicles Hayes' trip to Texas. Annotated by Hally Bryan Perry, the copy of Hayes' diary and letters to his family is entitled Chapter VIII, The Trip to Texas, 1848-1849, presumably from the publication The Diary and Letters of Rutherford Birchard Hayes. The manuscript discusses Hayes' experiences and impressions of the people and the country while visiting his Kenyon College classmate, Guy Morrison Bryan.

Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864. Hayes then was elected Governor of Ohio and later served one term as President of the United States (1877-1881) before retiring to his home in Fremont, Ohio, where he died in 1893.President of the Uni...

Guy Morrison Bryan, a nephew of Stephen F. Austin, was a Confederate officer and legislator. He was born in 1821 in Heraculaneum, Missouri, to James Bryan and Emily Bryan, daughter of Moses Austin and sister of Stephen F. Austin. After her husband’s death, Emily Bryan married her father’s business partner, Stephen Perry, and the family moved to Texas in 1831. Guy Morrison Bryan couriered the William B.
