Captain's letter copy book from the U.S. Steamer Currituck [manuscript], 1862-1863.

The volume contains copies of Linnekin's routine correspondence and reports from his station on the Rappahannock to superior officers including Commodore Andrew Allen Harwood and Navy Secretary Gideon Welles. Of interest are entries mentioning deserters, deaths in the crew, contrabands as informants, and capture of Confederate vessels. A letter, 1865 June 26, regarding a court martial of a man from the U.S.S. Tallahatchie.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Gideon Welles began his career as a lawyer but took up journalism as a profession, founding the Hartford Times, which he also edited, in 1826. Active in the Democratic Party in Connecticut, he served in the Connecticut state legislature and in several state offices.
