Samuel Fessenden correspondence, 1852-1863.

Typescript copies of correspondence of Fessenden, and others, largely concerned with his activities as a runaway in Illinois; as a student at Bowdoin College, and as an officer during the Civil War. Persons represented include E.S. Leland. Correspondents include William Pitt Fessenden and William Henry Christian. Fessenden's correspondence ends on 22 Aug. 1862; he died on 1 Sept. 1862. Christian's letter is dated 25 Nov. 1863. A note from J.L.B. (possibly John L. Baxter) discusses a portrait of Fessenden given to Bowdoin College.
