This collection consists mainly of reference files on topics of interest to the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) in determining goals and directions for the future. One segment of the collection was created by UMW research coordinator, Maier B. Fox, in the course of his writing a centennial history of the union. There is also departmental correspondence from the mid-1970s. A few files from both the reference and the Maier B. Fox series contained photographs, which were photocopied and then removed into a separate series for the purpose of preservation.
