Saying he did not answer her last note, "complaining of my not seeing the work", as it needed a longer explanation than he had time to write; saying "I see in a moment when people have taken pains and suppose--somewhat carelessly--that they must know that I do. The essential thing which I have to tell them is how the pains they are taking have missed mark and may be better directed. I never think of people expecting me to praise them;" saying that when he gets "to any pretty places to rest, I will tell you about them;"
